I Built tip.md to Help Open-Source Devs Get Crypto Tips via GitHub READMEs—What Do You Think?

Hi,

I’m the developer behind tip.md, a tool I created to let open-source contributors easily add cryptocurrency tipping buttons to their GitHub READMEs or markdown content.
I’ve been in the open-source community for a while and wanted to build a simple way for devs to receive support in Ethereum, Solana, or Bitcoin Lightning, directly to their wallets.

Why tip.md?

Open-source projects often struggle with funding, and I thought crypto tipping could be a lightweight way to help. Tip.md lets you add a “Tip in crypto” button to your repo’s README in minutes.
It supports ETH, SOL, and BTC Lightning, with a 4% fee on tips split transparently to keep the platform running.
The tool is free to use for devs—it’s not open-source itself, but I built it specifically to support the OSS community.
It’s not meant to replace platforms like GitHub Sponsors but rather add a crypto option to it, offering a decentralized option for devs comfortable with crypto.

How It Works

  1. Sign up at tip.md and connect a wallet.
  2. Generate a markdown button snippet.
  3. Paste it into your GitHub README or website. Done! Tips go straight to your wallet, and you can track them in your wallet or your tip.md dashboard/profile page.

Why I’m Sharing

I’ve been testing tip.md on my own repos and thought it might be useful for others.
I’d love to hear your thoughts:

  • Do you think a tool like tip.md, when paired with a contribution tracker, be useful for Retroactive Public Goods Funding (RPGF) in open-source? For example, tracking contributions and rewarding them with crypto tips retroactively?
  • Any features you’d want in a tool like this (e.g., more wallet options, better analytics)?
  • Any concerns about using crypto for OSS funding?

If you’re curious, you can check out tip.md for more details or try adding it to your repo. I’m here to answer questions or help with setup.
Full disclosure: This is my project, but I’m focused on feedback and discussion, not just promotion.

Thanks for taking a look!
